The Blairgowrie and Rattray Pub Quiz League as it was originally known, started nearly twenty years ago. The original quiz master was John Campbell with Alastair Gibb as treasurer. Alastair donated the original shield which was won outright by The Stormont in 2010. Lewis Paterson [one t] donated a new shield in 2011.
All John’s quizzes were hand written and questions were compiled from his vast knowledge or the previous weeks Guardian newspaper. The first winners were The Balmoral Hotel, followed by The Marlee. Other winners have included The Crown, Black Watch and current champions The Stormont. John sadly passed and the league was dormant for a few years. It was resurrected ten years ago by Davie Ramsay and Stella McKenna.
Davie is how ably assisted by Rita Ingram,Kay Shiel and Fran Gow.
There is a cup competition [The Audrey Morrison Trophy] which was donated in her memory by her brother Stewart.
Throughout the years an estimated £10,000 has been raised for local charities.
An annual competition between Alyth and Blairgowrie was introduced in 2009. The score in the town competition currently stands at 2-1 to Blair and in the team competition has been twice by The Victoria Hotel and once by The Benzie family representing Alyth.
The town trophy was presented by Jimmy Neave of The Balmoral Hotel in memory of John Campbell and his wife Ann who died suddenly last year. The team trophy was donated by Frank Benzies of Culross Printers Coupar Angus.
